WHY DOES MY DOG GET SO MANY EAR INFECTIONS?

There are several causes for ear infections but the most common reason is allergies. There is a very effective method of decreasing the number of ear infections your dog gets each year. Take extra care to insure no water gets in to the ears when you bathe your pet. Moisture in the ears can lead to ear infections. It is very important to examine the ears each time you think there may be an infection.

At a visit, the vet will often check the ear drum to insure it is not torn. Many commonly used ear medications can permanently damage the balance of your animal if you use it when the ear drum is torn. Then the vet may clean the ears with a detergent that is especially designed for ear infections.

You must start with clean ears to insure that the medication can work properly. It is recommended that you check the ears on every animal weekly. If there is an odor or any black or crusty material, you should have a vet see your animal right away. The sooner treatment is started, the faster those ears will heal. There can be damage to the ear canal with recurrent ear infections.
